How to Navigate MGM Grand: Layout, Directions, and Tips
6 min read
MGM Grand is the largest single hotel in the United States. Nearly 7,000 rooms spread across multiple towers, a 171,000 square foot casino, a 17,000-seat arena, and a convention center—all anchored by that iconic green glass exterior. The sheer scale is the problem. Walking from one end of the property to the other takes 10-15 minutes, and that's if you know where you're going.
First-time visitors consistently underestimate the distances. You'll check into your room, head down to explore, and realize your room is a quarter mile from the casino floor. This guide covers how MGM Grand is organized and how to get where you're going without the extra cardio.
How MGM Grand Is Laid Out
Think of MGM Grand as a massive rectangle with the casino floor in the center and everything else radiating outward. Unlike Caesars or Venetian, the layout is relatively logical—the problem is just distance.
The Casino Floor. The gaming area is roughly in the center of the ground level, one continuous space with no major divisions. It's big enough that you can walk for five minutes without leaving the casino. The main landmarks are the restaurants and bars along the perimeter. If you're disoriented, head for any wall and follow it around until you find what you need.
The Grand Tower. This is the main hotel tower, the massive green building you see from the Strip. It's divided into four wings: Emerald, Sapphire, Gold, and Hollywood. Each wing has its own elevator bank, and they don't connect above the ground floor. Check your room number to determine your wing—the first two digits usually indicate which one. The walk from some Grand Tower rooms to the casino can be 5-7 minutes.
The West Wing. A separate section of rooms on the west side of the property, closer to New York-New York. West Wing has its own entrance and elevator bank. It's actually more convenient to the Strip than some Grand Tower rooms.
The Signature. These are three separate all-suite towers east of the main building, technically their own property but connected to MGM Grand by an indoor walkway. If you're staying at The Signature, you're a 10+ minute walk from the main casino. The upside is a quieter, more private experience. The downside is distance to everything.
The Conference Center and Arena. The convention facilities and MGM Grand Garden Arena are on the south side of the property. If you have an event or concert, use the south entrance from the parking structure rather than walking through the entire casino from the Strip entrance.
Finding What You Need at MGM Grand
Hotel Elevators
The Grand Tower has four separate elevator banks for four wings (Emerald, Sapphire, Gold, Hollywood). They're not interchangeable—if you're in Emerald, the Sapphire elevators won't reach your floor. Look for signage with your specific wing name, not just "Hotel Elevators." From the casino floor, follow the overhead signs to your wing. Budget 3-5 minutes from the casino to your elevator bank, and another 2-3 to your room.
West Wing elevators are on the west side of the property, near the New York-New York connection. The Signature towers have their own elevators accessed via a walkway from the main building—follow signs toward the convention center and then to Signature.
Restaurants
MGM Grand has restaurants scattered throughout the property, but the main concentration is along the Studio Walk corridor near the main entrance, and around the casino perimeter. The food court is near the parking garage entrance on the south side. When booking reservations, note which part of the property the restaurant is in—some are a 5+ minute walk from the casino center.
Restrooms
Casino floor restrooms are along the outer walls, typically near elevator banks and restaurant clusters. Additional restrooms are in the conference center area (south side) and near the Arena entrance. The restrooms near the sportsbook tend to be less crowded than those near the main entrances.
The Sportsbook
The BetMGM Sportsbook is on the casino floor, positioned toward the center-north area of the property. It's a full sportsbook lounge with plenty of screens and seating. From the main Strip entrance, walk straight into the casino and look for signage on your right. It's one of the easier destinations to find because it's on the main floor with clear sightlines.
Exits and Strip Access
MGM Grand has multiple entrances, which is helpful once you know which one to use. The main entrance faces the Strip, near the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana. There's a porte cochère entrance on the north side for taxi and rideshare. The south entrance near the parking structure is best for arena events. The west side connects to New York-New York via an indoor walkway.
For rideshare pickup, the designated area is on the north side of the building. Exit through the porte cochère and follow signs for Uber/Lyft. Don't try to get picked up at the main Strip entrance—it's a pedestrian zone.
The Pool
MGM Grand's pool complex is on the south side of the property, behind the Grand Tower. Access is from the hotel area, not the casino floor directly. From the Grand Tower elevators, follow signs toward the pool level. If you're in West Wing or The Signature, budget extra time—it's a significant walk.
The Monorail
The Las Vegas Monorail has a station at MGM Grand, located on the east side of the property near The Signature walkway. From the casino floor, follow signs toward the convention center and then to the Monorail. It's about a 5-minute walk from the casino center. The monorail runs up the east side of the Strip to the Convention Center and Sahara—useful for avoiding the heat, but not convenient for west-side casinos like Bellagio or Caesars.
Getting to Nearby Casinos
To New York-New York: Use the indoor walkway on the west side of the casino floor. The connection is direct and air-conditioned—about a 3-minute walk once you find the entrance. Look for signs near the West Wing elevators.
To Aria / Park MGM: Take the free Aria Express tram. The tram station is inside MGM Grand, near the conference center on the south side of the property. Follow signs for "Aria Express" or "Tram." The ride takes about 5 minutes and drops you inside Aria. This is much better than walking, especially in summer.
To Excalibur: Walk across Tropicana Avenue via the pedestrian bridge on the north side of the property. The bridge connects near the main entrance area. About a 5-minute walk total.
To Luxor and Mandalay Bay: You can walk through Excalibur and use the free tram that connects Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay—or walk the Strip. The tram is faster and air-conditioned. Total time to Mandalay Bay: 15-20 minutes via tram, longer if walking outside.
To Bellagio or Caesars: Take the Aria Express tram to Aria, then use the Aria Express connection to Bellagio (it's a walkway from Aria through Vdara). Or walk the Strip—about 15-20 minutes to Bellagio, 20-25 to Caesars. No direct connection from MGM Grand.
